WILD JUNGLE TRAILS

Mgahinga National Park

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a beautiful and less-crowded way to experience Uganda’s mountain gorillas.

Located in the far southwestern corner of Uganda, the park forms part of the wider Virunga Conservation Area, a spectacular landscape of volcanic mountains shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mgahinga may be Uganda’s smallest national park, but its scenery and wildlife make it a special safari destination. The park is dominated by three striking Virunga volcanoes — Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo — surrounded by bamboo forests, montane vegetation and beautiful mountain views.

A gorilla trek begins early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers. Visitors are then guided into the forest by experienced trackers who follow signs left by the gorillas as they move through their natural habitat.

The trek can take several hours depending on the location of the gorillas and the conditions of the trail. Once the gorilla family is located, trekkers are allowed to spend one hour observing them, watching their behaviour, feeding habits and family interactions.

One of the special features of Mgahinga is the opportunity to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking. The park is one of Uganda’s best places to see golden monkeys, making it an excellent destination for travellers interested in primates.

Mgahinga also offers challenging volcano hikes, bird watching, nature walks and cultural experiences. Its combination of mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and dramatic volcanic scenery makes it a rewarding addition to a Uganda safari.

Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is the park's main wildlife experience. Accompanied by professional rangers and trackers, visitors walk through the forest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. Once the gorillas are found, trekkers spend one hour quietly observing and photographing them.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Mgahinga is particularly famous for its golden monkeys. These active and colourful primates live mainly within the park's bamboo forests. Tracking them offers a different experience from gorilla trekking, as the monkeys move quickly through the vegetation and often gather in lively groups.

Golden Monkey Habituation Experience

Visitors looking for more time with golden monkeys can take part in a habituation experience. This activity provides an opportunity to spend longer in the forest alongside researchers and trackers while learning more about golden monkey behaviour and conservation.

Volcano Hiking

Mgahinga offers some of Uganda's most impressive mountain hiking experiences. Adventurous travellers can hike the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, including Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhabura.

The hikes vary in difficulty and reward visitors with dramatic mountain scenery, changing vegetation and wide views across the surrounding Virunga landscape.

Nature and Forest Walks

Guided nature walks provide a quieter way to explore Mgahinga. Visitors can walk through bamboo forests, mountain vegetation and scenic areas while learning about the park's plants, birds, smaller wildlife and volcanic landscape.

Batwa Cultural Experience

The Batwa cultural experience introduces visitors to the traditional forest knowledge and history of the Batwa people, who have long-standing cultural connections to the forests of the region.

Golden Monkey Tracking in

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's main destination for golden monkey tracking. Located in the far southwest of the country, the park forms part of the greater Virunga landscape and is dominated by the volcanic peaks of Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo.

The park's extensive bamboo forests provide an ideal habitat for golden monkeys. Tracking normally begins in the morning with a briefing from park rangers before visitors enter the forest with experienced guides and trackers.

Unlike mountain gorillas, golden monkeys are constantly active. They move quickly through bamboo, leap between branches and occasionally come down to the forest floor to feed. This makes the experience energetic and particularly enjoyable for wildlife photographers.

Once a habituated group is located, visitors can watch the monkeys feeding, playing, grooming and interacting within their natural surroundings.
