WILD JUNGLE TRAILS

Golden Monkey Tracking in Uganda and Rwanda

Golden monkey tracking is an exciting primate experience that takes you into the beautiful bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains in search of one of East Africa's most colourful monkeys.

Recognised by their distinctive golden-orange fur, dark limbs and expressive faces, golden monkeys are active, playful primates that spend much of their time moving through bamboo forests in search of food. Unlike the slower and quieter experience of watching mountain gorillas, golden monkey tracking can be lively, with the monkeys jumping between branches, feeding on bamboo shoots and moving quickly through the vegetation.

Golden monkey tracking is mainly enjoyed in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Both parks form part of the greater Virunga landscape, an impressive region of volcanic mountains, bamboo forests and rich wildlife.

The experience normally begins in the morning with a briefing from park rangers. You then enter the forest with experienced guides and trackers who help locate a habituated golden monkey group. The trek takes you through beautiful mountain vegetation, particularly bamboo forest where the monkeys are commonly found.

Once the golden monkeys are located, visitors have an opportunity to observe and photograph them as they feed, climb, play and interact within their group.

Golden monkey tracking is a wonderful experience on its own, but it is also an excellent addition to a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda or Rwanda. Travellers can combine it with mountain gorilla trekking, volcano hiking, bird watching, cultural experiences and nature walks for a more complete Virunga adventure.

Golden Monkey Tracking Activities

Golden Monkey Tracking

The standard tracking experience takes visitors into the forest with professional guides to locate a habituated group of golden monkeys.

The monkeys are highly active, so the experience often involves watching them move quickly through bamboo, jump between trees and come down to the forest floor to feed.

Golden Monkey Habituation Experience

For travellers who want a deeper experience, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a golden monkey habituation experience.

Rather than simply tracking an already habituated group, participants accompany researchers and trackers as they study golden monkeys and help them gradually become accustomed to human presence.

This provides more time in the forest and an opportunity to learn about golden monkey behaviour, social structure, feeding habits and conservation.

Golden Monkey Photography

Golden monkey tracking offers excellent opportunities for primate photography. Their bright golden coats stand out beautifully against the green bamboo forest, although their quick movements can make photographing them an enjoyable challenge.

Bird Watching

The forests surrounding the golden monkey habitat support rich birdlife. Bird watching can therefore be included before, during or after a golden monkey trekking experience.

Nature and Forest Walks

Guided nature walks allow visitors to explore more of the Virunga environment, including bamboo forests, mountain vegetation and scenic viewpoints.

Gorilla Trekking

Golden monkey tracking combines particularly well with mountain gorilla trekking. Travellers can spend one day searching for gorillas and another tracking golden monkeys, providing two very different primate encounters within the same safari.

Volcano Hiking

For more active travellers, golden monkey tracking can be combined with hiking in the Virunga Mountains. In Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the dramatic volcanic landscape provides opportunities for challenging mountain hikes.

Where to Go Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden monkeys live in the high-altitude forests of the Virunga Mountains, a beautiful volcanic region stretching across Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

For travellers, the two main destinations for organised golden monkey tracking are Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
